Screenshot of the Forbes article How To Cultivate A Culture Of Belonging by William Arruda

In March 2023, William Arruda wrote a Forbes column on building a culture of belonging at work, and he used our research to make the case. Of the 56 core human values in the database, the most important one for the population of the United States is Belonging. Family comes second.

William's column brings in other research as well. People who feel they belong at work do their jobs better and take far fewer sick days, and he cites a 56% improvement in job performance and a 75% drop in absenteeism. When the value of Belonging is at the top for so many American employees, those numbers make sense. I'd add that in Canada the order flips, with Family first and Belonging second, which is one reason I'm careful about assuming that what works for an American team will work everywhere.

I do this sometimes, though. I get lost in the memories of my travel itinerary, the way some people get lost in old photo albums.
