I wrote this piece for HRM Outlook Canada in November 2024, for the people who hire senior leaders. A resume tells you what a candidate has done. To know whether they'll fit, you also need to know their values, and how those compare with your company's values and the values of the people they'll be leading. When all three line up, the hire has a real chance of working.
The example I used was a tech company built around new ideas that hires a CEO who puts stability first. The new CEO's instincts will keep pulling against what the company needs, and the team will feel it. Put someone who cares deeply about sustainability in charge of a sustainability program and you'll get a very different result from someone running it because they were told to. Companies whose leaders and employees share values tend to report higher satisfaction, lower turnover and better financial results. Values can be measured with data, which is a lot more reliable than going with your gut after an interview.
