Okay, but what about me? What are my values?
I do keynotes all around the world about how to understand people by figuring out What Matters Most to them, in other words, their values. And after every single one of those keynotes, the question I get more than any other is, "What are my values?"
Sometimes it's in the Q&A, sometimes in the hallway afterward, sometimes in an email a week later. People always want to know their own values. Which is understandable, of course.
My first two books did not answer this hallway question. So when Wiley called me up and said they wanted to publish my third book, I knew it had to be about helping you find and use your values.
After all, we've talked to a million people around the world about their values, so we've learned a thing or two that can help.
The book is called The Values Map, and it has three parts.
The first part offers techniques you can use to get a handle on your values and what's driving you.
The second part is a travelogue. We go around the world and meet people and movements who have been all about following their values, and see how to use what they've learned in your own life. We found some amazing stories:
- Japanese bodybuilders who will brush your teeth
- Women in South Korea smashing up all their makeup
- A shopping mall in Sweden that sells only what other people threw away, and
- a super-secret invitation-only campsite in the redwoods of California, only for billionaires,
to name just a few.
The last part is a field guide: exercises, worksheets, and frameworks that show you how to use what you learned about your values. Once you know what your values are and what matters most to you, you can get behind the wheel, take control, and drive the car that is your life in the direction you want to go.
There are so many influencers and talk show hosts and authors and speakers out there trying to convince you that you need to become somebody new, somebody different, when all you need to do is learn to be more of who you already are.
That's why I wrote this book, and that's what it shows you how to do.
The book is out in January. Between now and then, I'll share some of the tools and techniques from it right here, on social media, in my newsletter, and on this blog, a couple of times a week if I can keep up with the pace, so you can start working on your own values before the book even arrives.
And I need your help!
