I’ve been thinking a lot about AI lately. Who hasn’t? And I’m in a privileged position where I get to talk to some pretty amazing people and hear what they are thinking about/doing with AI. Here’s my take, at the moment, on three critical issues we all need to be pondering.
- AI: The Toddler with Infinite Potential
Right now, AI is a bit like a toddler. It’s entirely self-centered. Just like you wouldn’t let a toddler run a board meeting (no matter how cute), you can’t let AI run wild without some serious guidance. The only way to raise this “child” into a responsible adult is by teaching it empathy and an understanding of human values. We need to help AI see beyond its own algorithms and recognize the value of human connections. AI needs to learn that a human + technology alliance is better than trying to go it alone.
- The Self-Inventing Nature of AI
AI is inventing itself. It’s like watching your toddler build a Lego masterpiece without any instructions. It’s amazing but also a bit terrifying. We can’t predict exactly what AI will come up with next, which means our leaders need to be ready for anything. The only way to prepare is by deeply understanding the people who will be impacted by these changes. Values drive human behavior, and knowing what people value helps us predict how they’ll react to whatever AI throws at us.
- The Future of Work and Human Identity
Some experts predict that AI will eventually do as much as half of our work. Imagine having your workload cut in half! It sounds great until you realize you’ll need to redefine your purpose. What will you be doing instead? This is where understanding human values becomes crucial. If, for example, Creativity and Personal Growth are among your core values (or the shared values of your workforce) then we need to design new roles and new environments that foster these values. This ensures that people remain engaged and fulfilled, even as their job descriptions evolve. It’s about keeping the human spirit alive.
None of this scares me. I’m not worried about where we will end up, so long as we keep a firm focus on WHAT MATTERS MOST to us. To do that, we need to understand what people value. And that’s what we are here for.
It’s what my work as a speaker and author is all about. And it’s the work of The Valuegraphics Research Company to help organizations embrace values-based ways of working. And even our sister company the Values Identifier, which helps individuals lead values-driven lives. It’s all about values. Because Values are the answer. And we just have to put them to work.
